Underground Manchester.

Posted in interior design, lifestlye by delacybag on January 22, 2012

Here are a few photos of underground canal and chambers under the Great Northern Goods Warehouse, situated off Deansgate in Manchester city centre.

The Warehouse was completed in August 1899 but operations started in July 1898 when only the ground and first floors were complete such was the demand for the goods station. Inside was a spaghetti junction of rail lines with five platforms and twenty five cranes. To facilitate the movement of goods, wagon turntables were incorporated at the end of the lines to allow wagons to be turned round. The Manchester and Salford Junction canal, constructed in 1939, ran under the Warehouse, passing through a specially-built dock.

Two 40-cwt lifts shafts were used to transport goods to each of the building’s six levels, ready for dispatch to their next destination whether by canal or horse and cart.

During the Second World War, the canal, which had been operational until 1922, served a very different purpose. The canal was drained in order to provide an air raid shelter for the public. The walls built across the canals to stop any blast going right through the tunnels are still there.

The canal was less than a mile long, with 4 locks and a tunnel below the Deansgate area. It was built to let boats get between the Irwell and the Rochdale Canal without having to pass through the Bridgewater Canal’s Hulme link, the tolls for which were high.

Random Collecting…

Posted in interior design, lifestlye by delacybag on October 5, 2011

These are my collections I have collected so far in life.

Fruit Sticker Collection.

This is the one I’m most proud of. It lives in a cupboard and has come along way in a 18 months. There are mainly pink lady apples, they are not my favourite but pretty much the only apple Aldi sell, but on the occasion you may find 2 stickers on 1 apple – a collectors dream. Bananas are a bit of a s*** coz you only get 1 sticker on each bunch .

Thread Spool Collection.

I think I have just collected these due to the fact the thread costs about £4.00 for 100 Metres so it would seem a shame to throw them out, not sure where this is going really but its 37 strong now and that would actually cost alot, its probably my most expensive collection.

Jam Jar Collection.

Not sure how this has happened, but I now have a collection of 4 posh jam jars. Having just added the 3rd blackcurrant to it, I realized that some of them are actually turning into mold farms. This jam is pretty fit though, it turns toast into cake.

The Wooden Spoon Collection.

This is my most serious collection and my least favorite. The collection is not even kept together anymore just floating all over. The spoons have been collected in around 7 years from different countries, I can only remember Japan, Latvia and maybe France.  A friend gave me the one with the animal on it, from Kenya so I don’t have to go there which is great. Wooden spoon collection FAIL.

Highlights of the exhibition include Pulse Room, on show in the UK for the very first time. Premiered in Puebla, Mexico in 2006 and shown to critical acclaim in the Mexican pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2007, this compelling work is made up of 100 light bulbs which are activated by a sensor to flash at the exact rhythm of particpants’ heart rates. Also, the work People on People (a co-commission by Manchester Art Gallery and Abandon Normal Devices festival), a major new installation inspired by portraiture and shadowplays, which will turn the gallery’s temporary exhibition space into one of the world’s most advanced scanners.

Manchester Art Gallery is the only UK venue for the show so this is an interactive experience.

PEEP SHOW IN ANCOATS…

Posted in art, interior design, lifestlye by delacybag on June 23, 2010

Seek and one shall find. Just across the way from my apartment in manchester is Ancoats, which is now apartments built from the old cotton mills and textile factories of the past , i love this area ,the cobbled streets and subtle signs of what  lived before , the meet between modern and old.

there are hidden treasures here. the photo taken is of a peep hole art work within the building them selves on the outer walls, they have a nautical brass look about them on first glance, but truly magical as you would have to know they existed or romantically stumble across them. they art work is by Dan Dubowitz , an urban artist . I particularly enjoy this one as it features 2 sewing machines which both move as if having a lil chat ..

Ancoats is made up of three areas- Ancoats Urban Village, New Islington and the Ashton Canal Corridor.

The area’s proximity to the city centre means it benefits from all the central shops and bars as well as the up and coming Northern Quarter with its rich bohemian atmosphere. Only a ten minute walk from Piccadilly train station and situated directly on the inner ring road, it is perfect for residents commuting out of town as well as those coming to work in Ancoats.

Ancoats Urban Village is known as the world’s first industrial suburb and has one of the largest concentrations of Grade II and Grade II* listed building in Manchester. Many of these mills are currently being restored and turned into modern yet sympathetic apartments and commercial space

interior design stuff here i chose black as a theme , my top picks are the sexy coffee table the chesterfield chair is amazing, but the clock which changes colour between black and white depending on day or night and the DIY Munny speakers are by far my favs.

Black Nouveau interior lighting, designed by Rothschild & Bickers, is opulent range of black glass is made using traditional free blown techniques to create elegant fluid forms with a shiny rich reflective quality. The open frill comes with a chrome-topped bulb, which illuminates it internally and allows it to be viewed from below.

Digital clock: only figures, no case, only the necessary – only accurate time. Each figure has self-contained power supply and independent control, it can be fixed to any surface autonomously. A light sensor will switch the clock to an invert mode: the figures are white in the dark time of day and black at daytime. by  Kibardin Design

Pop up housing now?…

Posted in interior design, lifestlye by delacybag on April 24, 2010

Designer Gregg Fleishman has designed this DH1 Disaster House, which is a 14 square foot shelter built out of sustainable European birch. The entire thing assembles without fasteners, which makes it especially useful in emergency situations. Mmm not sure about this one looks kinda fly but we need to see some throw down housing up in here, that will fit in your pocket Plus I’ve always wanted to live in a home random people could walk by and disassemble?!?
